A short history

Japan's imperial line traces back over many centuries, and Kyoto was the capital for more than a thousand years. Feudal lords and samurai shaped the country until the Meiji Restoration of 1868 opened it to the world and rapid modernisation. Japan's militarism ended with defeat in the Second World War and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Postwar Japan rebuilt into one of the world's largest economies.
