A short history

Nara, then Heijo-kyo, became Japan's capital in 710. Buddhism flourished under imperial patronage, and Todai-ji's Great Buddha was dedicated in 752. The capital moved away in 784, leaving the temples to endure. They are now a UNESCO site.
