A short history

Fukuoka's port of Hakata has traded with mainland Asia for over a thousand years. Mongol fleets tried to invade here in 1274 and 1281. Hakata and the castle town of Fukuoka merged in 1889. Today it is one of Japan's fastest-growing cities.
