A short history

Naha grew as the port of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which traded across East Asia from the 1400s and had its royal seat at Shuri. Japan annexed the kingdom in 1879. Naha was heavily destroyed in the 1945 Battle of Okinawa and was under US administration until 1972. The reconstruction of Shuri Castle's main hall has been underway after a fire in 2019, and a reopening is planned for late 2026.
