Sri Lanka is a teardrop-shaped island off southern India with an astonishing mix in a small space. The Cultural Triangle holds ancient royal cities and the Sigiriya rock fortress, the hill country is a cool world of tea estates and scenic trains, and national parks have leopards and elephants. Beaches ring the coast, with good surf and whale watching in the south. It suits curious travellers who want culture, nature and beaches in one trip.

Seasons and weather
Best: December to April for the west and south, May to September for the east. The island has two monsoons, so one coast is usually dry.
The southwest monsoon soaks the west and south from May to September, and the northeast monsoon wets the east and north from October to January.
Busy and pricey. December to March, dry on the west and south coasts. High season: crowds and the highest hotel prices. Book ahead.
Shoulder. April and September to November. Good weather with fewer people and better prices.
Quiet and cheaper. May to August on the west coast, with rain and rough seas, but this is high season on the east coast. Low season: lowest prices and few crowds, but shorter days and some places closed.

A short history
Buddhism arrived in the 3rd century BC, and great kingdoms at Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa built huge stupas and reservoirs. Portuguese, Dutch and then British colonisers controlled the coast and later the whole island, which the British called Ceylon. Independence came in 1948, and a long civil war ended in 2009. An economic crisis in 2022 led to mass protests, and the country has since stabilised.
