Kandy is a hill city around a lake in Sri Lanka's central highlands and the last royal capital before British rule. It is the home of the Temple of the Tooth and the base for tea country, botanical gardens and the ancient rock sites. It suits culture seekers, families and slow travellers who like cooler air.

TippingAbout 10 percent in restaurants if no service charge is added; small tips for drivers.
PaymentsCards work in larger hotels and restaurants; carry rupees for tuk tuks, markets and entry fees.
EtiquetteDress modestly, remove shoes and hats at temples and do not pose with your back to Buddha statues. Offer or accept things with the right hand.
  • Esala Perahera fills hotels months ahead, so book early if visiting in July or August.
  • The Temple of the Tooth holds ritual offerings in the morning and evening; arrive earlier than the ceremony to find a spot.
  • Evening rain is common in the hills, so bring a light waterproof.
  • Be careful with unofficial guides and gem sellers who approach you near the temple.
  • Elephant rides and shows have animal welfare concerns; choose observation based, ethical sanctuaries.

A short history

Kandy was the capital of the last independent Sinhalese kingdom from the late 1500s and resisted European control longer than the coastal areas. The British took it in 1815. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the sacred Temple of the Tooth, which holds a relic believed to be a tooth of the Buddha. It remains the centre of Sri Lankan Buddhism and traditional Kandyan dance and music.
