A short history

Arab, Portuguese, Dutch and British traders all shaped Colombo's port. The Portuguese arrived in the 16th century, followed by the Dutch and then the British in 1796. It became the capital of independent Ceylon in 1948. Sri Lanka's administrative capital is now nearby Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte.
