Poland is a large Central European country with lively cities, a Baltic coast and mountains in the south. Kraków's old town, Warsaw's rebuilt centre and Gdańsk's harbour are the main draws. It also holds the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial and salt mines carved into churches. It suits history lovers and travellers on a budget.

A short history

Poland was a powerful kingdom and, with Lithuania, one of Europe's largest states in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was partitioned by neighbours and vanished from the map from 1795 until 1918. Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union invaded in 1939, and millions died, including most of Poland's Jews. After decades of communist rule, the Solidarity movement led to free elections in 1989.
