Croatia stretches along the Adriatic with over a thousand islands and a green interior. It suits travellers who like beaches, sailing, Roman and Venetian towns and seafood. It is known for Dubrovnik, Split's Diocletian's Palace and Plitvice Lakes. Summer is busy, so spring and autumn are lovely alternatives.

A short history

The coast was part of the Roman Empire, and Diocletian built his retirement palace at Split around 300. Later centuries saw Venetian, Hungarian, Habsburg and Ottoman influence, with Dubrovnik a powerful independent republic. Croatia was part of Yugoslavia and declared independence in 1991, followed by a war until 1995. It joined the EU in 2013 and adopted the euro in 2023.
