Dubrovnik is a perfectly preserved walled city on Croatia's southern coast. Walking its walls above terracotta roofs and the sea is the highlight. It gets very crowded in summer, so shoulder months are ideal.

A short history

As the Republic of Ragusa, Dubrovnik was a wealthy maritime state that rivaled Venice for centuries. A 1667 earthquake destroyed much of the city, which was rebuilt in Baroque style. It was shelled during the 1991 to 1992 siege and later restored.
