Uruguay is a small, calm country between Argentina and Brazil, with a long Atlantic coast and rolling cattle country inland. Montevideo has a relaxed old town and a long riverside promenade, while Colonia del Sacramento is a cobbled colonial gem. Summer brings glamour to Punta del Este and a hippie vibe to Cabo Polonio and Punta del Diablo. It suits travellers who want an easygoing pace, beaches, beef and wine.

A short history

Spanish and Portuguese empires fought over this land, and Colonia del Sacramento changed hands many times. Uruguay became independent in 1828 as a buffer between Argentina and Brazil. In the early 20th century it built one of Latin America's first welfare states. After a military dictatorship from 1973 to 1985 it returned to democracy and is known today for stability and progressive laws.
