South Korea mixes neon megacities with royal palaces, mountain temples and a coastline dotted with islands. Seoul is the draw for food, shopping and K-pop culture, while Gyeongju, Busan and Jeju show older and softer sides. Transport is fast, clean and easy, and the food is bold and varied. It suits city lovers, food fans, hikers and anyone curious about modern Korean culture.

Seasons and weather
Best: April to May and September to November. Spring blossoms and autumn colours bring mild, clear weather.
Summer is hot, humid and wet with the July monsoon; winter is cold and dry, especially in the north and mountains, while Jeju is milder.
Busy and pricey. April cherry blossom and October autumn foliage, plus Chuseok and Lunar New Year holidays. High season: crowds and the highest hotel prices. Book ahead.
Shoulder. May to June and September. Good weather with fewer people and better prices.
Quiet and cheaper. December to February, cold but cheaper, with ski resorts open. Low season: lowest prices and few crowds, but shorter days and some places closed.

A short history
Korean kingdoms such as Silla and Goguryeo rose about two thousand years ago, and the Joseon dynasty ruled from Seoul for five centuries until 1910. Japan colonised Korea from 1910 to 1945. The peninsula was then divided, and the Korean War of 1950 to 1953 ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty. South Korea grew from poverty into a rich democracy and a global cultural force.
