PaymentsCards are accepted almost everywhere; T-money cards cover transit and convenience stores.
EtiquetteGive up priority seats on the metro and use two hands when handing things to elders.
  • Google Maps walking directions are limited; use Naver or Kakao.
  • Palaces close one day a week, usually Monday or Tuesday.
  • Wearing hanbok gives free entry to the main palaces.
  • Many visitors need a K-ETA before arriving; check current rules.
  • Check entry rules before you fly: many nationalities were exempt from the K-ETA permit until at least the end of 2026, but rules change, so verify on the official site.
  • Gyeongbokgung is closed on Tuesdays and Changdeokgung is closed on Mondays.
  • Many restaurants serving barbecue expect at least two people ordering.
  • Foreign credit cards often fail at small vendors, and a Korean map app such as Naver Map works better than Google Maps for walking directions.

A short history

Seoul became the capital of the Joseon dynasty in 1394, when Gyeongbokgung Palace was built. Japan ruled Korea from 1910 to 1945, and the Korean War badly damaged the city. Rapid growth from the 1960s turned it into one of Asia's leading tech and culture hubs.
