A short history

Portugal became a kingdom in the 12th century and is one of Europe's oldest nation states. In the 15th and 16th centuries its navigators reached Africa, India, Brazil and Japan. The 1755 earthquake destroyed much of Lisbon. A peaceful revolution in 1974 ended dictatorship, and Portugal joined the EU in 1986.
