A short history

Portuguese navigators reached Madeira in the early 1400s and settlers founded Funchal, named after the fennel plant growing there. The island became rich from sugar and later from Madeira wine, which was shipped around the world. British merchants played a big role in the wine trade. In the 19th century the city became a health resort for European visitors, and tourism has dominated since.
