A short history

Peru was home to many cultures, including Caral, Chavín, Nazca and Moche, long before the Incas built their empire from Cusco in the 15th century. Spanish conquistadors toppled the Inca state in the 1530s and ruled the Viceroyalty of Peru from Lima. Peru declared independence in 1821. Conflict with the Shining Path in the 1980s and 1990s has given way to steady growth, though politics remain turbulent.
