A short history

Indigenous peoples such as the Guna and Emberá lived here before Spanish conquest in the 16th century. Panama was a key route for Spanish treasure and later part of Colombia. With US backing it separated from Colombia in 1903, and the canal opened in 1914 under US control. Panama took full control of the canal in 1999.
