Montenegro is a small Adriatic country where steep mountains drop straight into the sea. The Bay of Kotor, with its walled towns, is the star, while the Budva Riviera has beaches and nightlife. Inland, Durmitor and Biogradska Gora offer canyons, lakes and forests. It is compact enough to see a lot in a week.

A short history
The region was part of Roman, Byzantine and Serbian medieval states, and Venice held much of the coast for centuries. The mountain principality resisted Ottoman control and was recognised as independent in 1878. Montenegro was later part of Yugoslavia and then a union with Serbia. It voted for independence in 2006.
