Kenya is one of Africa's classic safari destinations, home to the Maasai Mara, Amboseli's elephants beneath Kilimanjaro and the lakes of the Great Rift Valley. Nairobi is a modern city with a national park on its edge. After a safari, the Indian Ocean coast offers beaches and Swahili towns like Lamu. It suits wildlife lovers, families and honeymooners who combine bush and beach.

Seasons and weather

Best: July to October and January to February. Dry seasons offer the best wildlife viewing, and the Great Migration is usually in the Mara from about July to October.

Long rains fall from about March to May and short rains around November; the coast is hot and humid all year.

Busy and pricey. July to October and Christmas to New Year. High season: crowds and the highest hotel prices. Book ahead.
Shoulder. January to February and June. Good weather with fewer people and better prices.
Quiet and cheaper. March to May, the long rains with lower prices. Low season: lowest prices and few crowds, but shorter days and some places closed.

January. Shoulder season. Good balance of weather and crowds.

A short history

Kenya's Rift Valley holds some of the earliest evidence of human ancestors. Swahili trading towns grew along the coast, linking Africa with Arabia and India for centuries. Britain colonised Kenya in the late 1800s, and the Mau Mau uprising of the 1950s helped push toward independence in 1963. Today Kenya is East Africa's economic hub.
