Jamaica is a lush Caribbean island famous for reggae, jerk cooking and long white sand beaches. Most visitors stay around Montego Bay, Negril or Ocho Rios, but the island also has waterfalls, rivers, coffee covered mountains and Kingston's music scene. Its culture is bold, creative and proud. It suits beach lovers, music fans and families who stay mostly in resort areas.

A short history

The Taíno people lived on the island before Spain claimed it after Columbus arrived in 1494. England took Jamaica in 1655, and enslaved Africans were forced to work on sugar plantations until emancipation in the 1830s. Maroon communities of escaped people kept their independence in the mountains. Jamaica gained independence from Britain in 1962 and gave the world reggae and Bob Marley.
