A short history

The Taino lived here before the Spanish arrived in 1494. Britain took Jamaica in 1655 and built sugar estates worked by enslaved Africans. The 1831 Christmas Rebellion led by Sam Sharpe began near Montego Bay. Jamaica became independent in 1962, and tourism grew after the airport opened.
