Fiji is a South Pacific nation of more than 300 islands, known for soft coral reefs, white sand beaches and a famously friendly welcome. Most visitors arrive at Nadi on Viti Levu and spread out to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands or the Coral Coast. Beyond the resorts there are rainforest, waterfalls, villages and some of the best diving in the Pacific. It suits families, couples and divers looking for easy island time.

Seasons and weather

Best: May to October. The cooler dry season brings lower humidity, calmer seas and less rain.

November to April is hotter and wetter, with the risk of tropical cyclones; the west of Viti Levu is drier than Suva and the east.

Busy and pricey. June to September and Australian and New Zealand school holidays. High season: crowds and the highest hotel prices. Book ahead.
Shoulder. April to May and October to November. Good weather with fewer people and better prices.
Quiet and cheaper. December to March, the wet and cyclone season with lower prices. Low season: lowest prices and few crowds, but shorter days and some places closed.

January. Quiet season. Lower prices, fewer crowds.

A short history

Fiji was settled by seafaring peoples about 3,000 years ago and developed a strong chiefly culture. European traders and missionaries arrived in the 1800s, and Fiji became a British colony in 1874. The British brought indentured labourers from India to work on sugar plantations, which is why Fiji has a large Indo Fijian community today. Independence came in 1970, followed by periods of political instability and coups.
