A short history
The iTaukei people have lived on Viti Levu for about 3,000 years, organized in chiefly confederacies. Fiji became a British colony in 1874, and from 1879 more than 60,000 indentured laborers were brought from India to work on sugar plantations around Nadi and other western towns. Their descendants form a large part of Nadi's population, which explains its Hindu temples and Indian food. An airfield built for Allied forces during World War II later became Nadi International Airport. Fiji became independent in 1970, and Nadi grew into the country's tourism hub.
