Ethiopia is a highland country with its own ancient church, calendar, alphabet and coffee culture. Its historic north holds rock hewn churches, castles and the ruins of Aksum, while the south has the Rift Valley lakes and diverse traditional cultures. Travel can be rewarding but demanding, and security conditions vary sharply by region. It suits experienced travellers who check current advice closely.

Seasons and weather

Best: October to March. The dry season after the main rains brings green landscapes and clear skies.

The main rains fall from June to September in the highlands; the south has its own short rainy seasons and lowlands like Danakil are extremely hot.

Busy and pricey. October to January, including Meskel and Timkat festivals. High season: crowds and the highest hotel prices. Book ahead.
Shoulder. February to May. Good weather with fewer people and better prices.
Quiet and cheaper. June to September, the long rainy season with muddy roads. Low season: lowest prices and few crowds, but shorter days and some places closed.

January. Busy season. Higher prices, bigger crowds.

Know before you go

At a glance

2/5
Safety

The US State Department rates Ethiopia Level 3 (reconsider travel), with Level 4 (do not travel) for several regions and border areas, citing unrest, crime, kidnapping and terrorism, so check current advice before planning any route.

2/5
Getting around

Distances are long and roads slow, so most visitors use Ethiopian Airlines domestic flights and hired drivers.

3/5
Value

Daily costs are low, but guides, drivers and domestic flights raise the bill.

Entry rules depend on your passport. Members see the rules for their own passport here.

Passport and visa rules change often and without notice. Always check the official pages before you book and again before you travel.

EntryCheck visa and entry rules on the official Ethiopian e-Visa platform (https://www.evisa.gov.et/) and on your own government's travel advice before you go, as rules can change.

EtiquetteReligion is central to daily life, so be respectful in churches and mosques. Greetings matter, often with a handshake and a shoulder touch. Ask before taking photos of people, especially in the south.
What to wearCover shoulders and legs at religious sites, remove shoes in churches and mosques, and women may be asked to cover their heads.
DrivingOn the right
Between citiesEthiopian Airlines runs a wide domestic network and is the usual way to cover long distances. Most visitors hire a driver and guide for road travel, as long distance buses are slow and roads can be rough. Always check current regional security advice before choosing a route.

A short history

Ethiopia is one of the oldest states in the world, with the Aksumite kingdom trading across the Red Sea about 2,000 years ago. Christianity arrived in the 4th century and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church shaped its art and churches. Apart from a short Italian occupation from 1936 to 1941, it was never colonised. Recent decades have brought fast growth but also internal conflicts, including in Tigray and Amhara.
