A short history

Emperor Menelik II founded Addis Ababa in 1886, and the city quickly became the capital of the empire. It survived a brief Italian occupation in the 1930s and 1940s, and later became the seat of the Organisation of African Unity, now the African Union. Rapid growth since the 2000s has brought new roads, a light rail and many construction sites.
