Bulgaria is a Balkan country between the Danube and the Black Sea, with mountains in the south and west. It suits budget travellers who like history, hiking, beaches and skiing. It is known for Rila Monastery, the old towns of Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo, and resorts on the coast. Prices are among the lowest in the European Union.
