EtiquetteNodding and head shaking can mean the opposite of what you expect: a head shake side to side means yes. Cover shoulders and knees in churches.
  • Bulgaria uses the euro since January 2026; prices may be shown in both currencies for a while.
  • Bulgarians shake the head for yes and nod for no, which can confuse visitors.
  • Use ride apps instead of street taxis.
  • Tap water is safe but sometimes tastes of minerals.
  • Check opening days for museums, as many close on Mondays.

A short history

Sofia has been settled since ancient times, and Roman Serdica was an important city under Emperor Constantine's era. It became Bulgaria's capital in 1879 after the end of Ottoman rule. The city was heavily bombed in the Second World War and rebuilt in a mix of socialist and modern styles. Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026.
