Belgium is a small country in western Europe with medieval cities close together. It suits travellers who enjoy art, food, beer and easy train trips. It is known for Bruges, Ghent and Brussels' Grand Place, plus First World War sites. You can base yourself in one city and day trip around the country.

A short history
The region grew rich in the Middle Ages on cloth trade, especially in Flanders. Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830. It was a battlefield in both world wars, with sites around Ypres recalling the First World War. Today it is a federal state with Dutch, French and German speaking communities and hosts the EU institutions.
