A short history

Bruges was one of Europe's richest trading cities in the 13th to 15th centuries, a hub of the cloth trade. Flemish Primitive painters like Jan van Eyck worked here. When its access to the sea silted up, the city declined and was preserved. Its historic center is a UNESCO site.
