A short history

The island was settled by the English in 1627 and became a wealthy sugar colony worked by enslaved Africans. Slavery was abolished in 1834, and the island's culture today is shaped by its African heritage. Barbados became independent in 1966. In 2021 it became a parliamentary republic while staying in the Commonwealth.
