A short history
English settlers founded Bridgetown in 1628 beside a crude bridge built by the Indigenous people who had lived there earlier. Sugar plantations worked by enslaved Africans made Barbados one of England's richest colonies in the 1600s and 1700s, and Bridgetown became a major port. The Garrison south of town was the headquarters of British forces in the eastern Caribbean. Slavery was abolished in 1834, followed by full emancipation in 1838. Barbados became independent in 1966 and a republic in 2021, and the historic center and Garrison were UNESCO listed in 2011.
