Armenia is a small, mountainous country in the South Caucasus with a deep Christian heritage. It suits travellers who like history, scenic drives and food at modest prices. It is known for medieval monasteries in dramatic settings, views of Mount Ararat and lively Yerevan. Most sights are within a few hours' drive of the capital.

Best: May to June and September to October. Mild weather, green or golden hills and comfortable sightseeing.

Yerevan is very hot in July and August, while high passes and Lake Sevan are cool; winter brings snow to the mountains.

Busy and pricey. June to September. High season: crowds and the highest hotel prices. Book ahead.
Shoulder. May, October. Good weather with fewer people and better prices.
Quiet and cheaper. November to April: cold, quiet, ski season at Tsaghkadzor. Low season: lowest prices and few crowds, but shorter days and some places closed.

January. Quiet season. Lower prices, fewer crowds.

A short history

Armenia was the first state to adopt Christianity, traditionally dated to 301. Over the centuries it was ruled or contested by Persian, Byzantine, Ottoman and Russian powers. The Armenian Genocide of 1915 to 1923 is central to national memory. Armenia became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991, and relations with Azerbaijan remain tense after the conflicts over Nagorno-Karabakh.
