A short history

Yerevan traces its roots to the Urartian fortress of Erebuni, founded in 782 BC, which makes it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities. Armenia adopted Christianity as a state religion in the early 4th century, the first country to do so. Persian and Ottoman rule alternated for centuries before the Russian Empire took the city in 1827. The modern center, built from pink volcanic tuff, was planned by architect Alexander Tamanian in the 1920s. Armenia became independent in 1991.
