A short history

Varanasi, also called Kashi and Benares, has been inhabited for at least 3,000 years. The Buddha gave his first sermon at nearby Sarnath. Many temples were destroyed and rebuilt over centuries, and most ghats date from the 18th century. Hindus believe dying here brings liberation.
