A short history

The Sami people have lived in this region for thousands of years. Tromso received town status in 1794 and grew on trade, fishing and Arctic hunting. In the 19th and early 20th centuries it was a base for polar expeditions, earning the name Gateway to the Arctic. The world's northernmost university opened here in 1972. Northern lights tourism has boomed since the 2000s.
