Tap waterSafe to drink
TippingNot expected; leaving small change in restaurants is fine.
PaymentsCards are widely accepted, but small pintxos bars may prefer cash for small bills.
EtiquettePintxos are eaten standing at the bar. Order a drink, take food from the bar or ask for hot items, and pay at the end.
  • Book popular restaurants well ahead, especially for dinner.
  • Rain is common and can arrive suddenly; bring a light jacket.
  • Many bars close on Sunday evenings or on Mondays.
  • The Old Town is crowded in the evening, so go earlier or in the late morning for pintxos.
  • Bring an adapter and a good walking shoe; the climbs to the viewpoints are steep.
  • Order hot pintxos (pintxos calientes) from the kitchen blackboard menu rather than just grabbing cold pintxos from the counter displays.
  • Pair pintxos with Txakoli, a dry, slightly sparkling Basque white wine poured from high above the glass to aerate the wine.
  • The city has three distinct beaches: La Concha (sheltered and calm), Ondarreta (family-friendly), and Zurriola (active surfing).

A short history

The city began as a small fishing and trading town on the Bay of Biscay and was rebuilt after a fire in 1813 during the Peninsular War. In the 19th century the Spanish royal family made it a summer home, which brought the elegant belle epoque seafront. The old town was rebuilt in a grid. It is now one of Spain's top food and film destinations.
