A short history

The town was founded in the 1500s as a Spanish outpost on the silver route and grew rich from ranching and mining. It became a cradle of the independence movement when Ignacio Allende, a local hero, joined the revolt in 1810. After decades of decline, artists and foreign residents arrived in the 20th century and helped revive it. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008.
