A short history

Kochi was a major spice trading port for over 600 years, visited by Chinese, Arab, Jewish and European traders. The Portuguese arrived in 1500, followed by the Dutch and British. A flood in 1341 helped create the natural harbor. Modern Kochi mixes colonial heritage with a growing tech and shipping economy, and the Kochi Biennale has made it an art destination.
