A short history

Cancun was a small fishing area until the Mexican government chose it for a planned resort in the 1970s. The hotel zone was built on a long sandbar. It grew into one of the busiest tourist destinations in the Americas. Mexico chose Cancun for planned tourism development in the late 1960s, when it was a small fishing village.
