A short history

King Olav Kyrre founded Bergen around 1070, and in the 13th century it served as Norway's capital. From the 1300s German merchants of the Hanseatic League ran a trading post at Bryggen, exporting dried cod from northern Norway. Fires destroyed the wooden town many times, and Bryggen was rebuilt in the old style after each one. Bryggen was listed by UNESCO in 1979. Today Bergen is Norway's second city and its main gateway to the western fjords.
