Safety

UK advice for Ghana lists only the Bawku area as all but essential travel; in Accra the main risks are petty theft, scams and traffic.

2/5
Walkability

Heavy traffic, hot weather and missing pavements make walking hard outside small districts.

2/5
Public transport

Informal minibuses called tro tros are cheap but confusing; most visitors use taxis or ride apps.

A short history

The Ga people settled the coast, and European traders built forts here from the 1600s. Accra became the capital of the British Gold Coast colony in 1877, and Ghana became the first sub Saharan African country to gain independence in 1957 under Kwame Nkrumah. The city has since grown into a major regional centre for business and the arts.
