South Africa combines big-game safaris, dramatic mountains and long coastlines with lively cities and fine wine. Cape Town sits beneath Table Mountain, the Winelands and the Garden Route lie east of it, and Kruger National Park is one of Africa's great wildlife areas. The country's recent history, from apartheid to Nelson Mandela, is told in powerful museums. It suits self-drive road trippers, safari first-timers and food and wine lovers.

Seasons and weather

Best: May to September for safaris, November to March for the Cape. Dry winter thins the bush for game viewing, while the Cape is sunny and warm in summer.

Cape Town has winter rain from June to August, while Kruger and the northeast get summer rain and heat.

Busy and pricey. December to January, local summer holidays, with crowded coasts. High season: crowds and the highest hotel prices. Book ahead.
Shoulder. March to May and September to November. Good weather with fewer people and better prices.
Quiet and cheaper. June to August in the Cape, wetter and cooler, but prime safari time in the north. Low season: lowest prices and few crowds, but shorter days and some places closed.

January. Busy season. Higher prices, bigger crowds.

A short history

People have lived here for a very long time, and sites in the Cradle of Humankind hold some of the oldest human fossils known. Dutch settlers arrived at the Cape in 1652, followed by British rule and long conflicts with African kingdoms. From 1948 the apartheid system enforced racial segregation until it was dismantled in the early 1990s. Nelson Mandela became the first president of a democratic South Africa in 1994.
