Qatar is a small, very wealthy country on a peninsula in the Persian Gulf. Doha's museums, waterfront and souk make it a popular stopover, while the desert to the south has dunes running to an inland sea. It is clean and easy to navigate. The US government currently advises reconsidering travel due to the regional armed conflict and flight disruption, so check advice before booking.

A short history

The peninsula was home to pearl diving and fishing communities for centuries, and Al Zubarah was a major pearling town. The Al Thani family has led the country since the 19th century. Qatar was a British protectorate until independence in 1971. Natural gas wealth transformed it, and it hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
