The Netherlands is a small, flat and densely populated country, much of it reclaimed from the sea. Amsterdam's canals and museums draw most visitors, but Rotterdam, Utrecht and smaller towns are just a short train ride away. Windmills, tulip fields and dikes shape the countryside. It suits culture lovers, cyclists and anyone who likes easy, efficient travel.

A short history

The Dutch Republic won independence from Spain in the late 16th century and became a world trading power in its Golden Age. Rembrandt and Vermeer painted in this era, and the Dutch East India Company traded across Asia. The country was occupied by Germany in the Second World War. Today it is a constitutional monarchy and a founding member of the EU.
