A short history

The Khmer Empire ruled much of mainland Southeast Asia from about the 9th to 15th centuries, building Angkor. Cambodia became a French protectorate in 1863 and gained independence in 1953. From 1975 to 1979 the Khmer Rouge regime killed an estimated 1.5 to 2 million people. Peace returned slowly in the 1990s, and tourism is now vital.
