Bahrain is a small island kingdom in the Gulf, linked to Saudi Arabia by a causeway. It suits short trips focused on history, food and city life. It is known for Dilmun-era archaeology, the pearling heritage of Muharraq and the Formula 1 Grand Prix. The US government currently advises visitors to reconsider travel because of regional conflict, so check the latest advice before planning.

A short history

Bahrain was the centre of the ancient Dilmun civilisation, a Bronze Age trading hub. Pearl diving drove the economy for centuries until oil was found in 1932. It was a British protectorate until independence in 1971 and is now a constitutional monarchy. In 2026 regional hostilities between the US and Iran brought threats of drone and missile strikes and flight disruption across the Gulf.
