Albania is a compact Balkan country with a rugged mountain interior and a long Adriatic and Ionian coastline. It suits travellers who want beaches, hiking and history at lower prices than its neighbours. It is known for the Albanian Riviera, the stone towns of Berat and Gjirokastër, and the high Accursed Mountains. Tourism has grown fast, but many places still feel uncrowded outside midsummer.

EtiquetteAlbanians are very hospitable and may refuse payment from guests. A head shake can mean yes and a nod can mean no, so check with words.
What to wearCover shoulders and knees when entering mosques and churches.
DrivingOn the right
Between citiesBuses and furgons connect most towns from Tirana, but there is almost no useful passenger rail. Renting a car gives the most freedom, especially on the coast, though mountain roads are slow.

A short history

The area was home to the ancient Illyrians and later came under Greek, Roman and Byzantine influence. The Ottoman Empire ruled for around four centuries until independence in 1912. From 1944 to 1991 Albania was one of the most isolated communist states in Europe, which explains the thousands of concrete bunkers you still see. Since the 1990s it has opened up and is now an EU candidate country.
