A short history

The city was laid out in the 1790s as a purpose-built federal capital on land along the Potomac. British troops burned the Capitol and White House in 1814. The National Mall grew over the 19th and 20th centuries into a stage for memorials and protest. Today it is the seat of all three branches of the US government.
