Vina del Mar is a seaside resort on Chile's central coast, about two hours from Santiago and right next to Valparaiso. It is tidy and green, with gardens, mansions, a flower clock and long sandy beaches, though the Pacific is cold for swimming. It suits relaxed beach breaks, families and anyone pairing modern comforts with day trips to colourful Valparaiso.

  • Sea fog can roll in on summer mornings.

  • Summer weekends are crowded, so book hotels and buses early.

A short history

The area was a rural estate until the railway between Santiago and Valparaiso arrived in the 1850s. Wealthy families then built summer mansions and the town was founded in 1878. In the early 20th century it became Chile's leading beach resort, with a casino and grand hotels. Its international song festival, held since 1960, made the name famous across Latin America.
