TippingRounding up or about 10 percent in restaurants is appreciated.
PaymentsCards are widely accepted; keep a little cash for markets.
EtiquetteDress modestly in religious sites and greet people with a simple hello.
  • Driving is on the left.
  • Tap water is safe but tastes of desalination; many drink bottled.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: streets are steep and slippery when wet.
  • Many museums close on Sunday afternoons or on public holidays, so check hours.
  • Taxis without meters can overcharge; use a ride app.
  • Book St John's Co Cathedral and the Hypogeum ahead in peak season.
  • Summer afternoons are very hot, so plan sights for mornings and evenings.

A short history

The Knights of St. John founded Valletta in 1566, right after defeating the Ottoman Great Siege of Malta. They planned it on a grid with massive bastions and filled it with baroque churches and palaces. Napoleon took Malta in 1798, and Britain ruled from 1800 until independence in 1964. Valletta was heavily bombed in World War II. The whole city was listed by UNESCO in 1980 and was a European Capital of Culture in 2018.
